Words Their Way
Guess What!
Our students get the opportunity to do on level spelling and word work according to each individual child's needs. We are doing a program called Words Their Way. Students are put into leveled groups according to needs. While in these groups they get to sort word patterns and practice how to recognize words and spelling patterns.
Each week the students will get two copies of their word pattern list, one for school practice and the second to keep at home for practice. Please allow your child to practice with you and teach you about the patterns.
Did you know that if a child can teach a topic they retain 90% of the information rather that if they only hear the information once they only retain about 10% of it?!?!?!?! Crazy!!

Explanation of Sorts - Try these at home!
Introduce:
Each group meets with me to practice saying each word, discussing the meaning of words, and looking for patterns and similarities between words and patterns. After our discussion, students get two of their word lists: one to cut out and keep at school to practice and one copy to keep at home and practice with siblings or parents.
Open Sort:
Each student sorts their words into different categories (without using the category labels). After they sort independently, they are to write the lists of words into their Words Their Way notebook.
Buddy Sort:
Students can choose a partner within their Words Their Way group with to sort. Student #1 reads the words aloud to student #2 without showing the words. Student #2 tells student #1 which category the word would fit. Student #1 places the word face down in that category. Remember: Do not tell student #2 if the word is or is not in the correct category. When finished reading words, Student #2 turns all of the cards over. Read the cards aloud to check to see if words are in the correct categories. Students then switch roles.
Speed Sort:
Students work in pairs or groups of three to sort words as fast as they can. Each student holds their cards and at the same time each student begins sorting their words into correct groups. Students check their words to make sure they are sorted correctly. Students get to shake hands and say "good job" after each sort.
Assessment:
Practice testing your student using all of his/her words.
